St. Joseph Square used to be a parade and military drill place.
On the 1835 Tsar Nicolaus I, Prussian King Frederick Wilhelm III and representative of the Austrian Emperor met here. The event was accompanied by a military orchestra players. Monument of John Paul II commemorates a more important event: the Pope's piligrimage on the 4th of June 1997.
