The beginnings of the sanctuary date back to 1628 when a painting of the Virgin Mary and Jesus was brought to Kawnice.
The painting was placed in Kawnice, in a Church which was regained from protestants. When the cult related to the painting became famous, Pope Pius 16th introduced a three-day indulgence of Our Lady of Consolation, which takes place until this day on a Sunday following August 28th.
