The historic Salt Mine in Bochnia is the oldest salt mine on Polish territory. Its origins date back to 1248, when probably accidentally, while deepening brine wells to a depth of about 50m, rock salt was discovered in Poland for the first time.

The mine in Bochnia was the deepest salt mine in Poland. It has 16 mining levels, the lowest of which is at a depth of 468m below ground. Due to significant depletion of resources, it was decided to discontinue exploitation of the mine in 1992. The lowest excavations were filled with sand and brine, while conservation work was undertaken that would adapt the underground workings of tourist activities and also a spa resort. Currently, the deepest is Level 9, which is 289m below ground. Parts of the underground workings have been opened to the public in the form of a tourist route. It includes the most beautiful and the most interesting excavations on Levels IV (August) and Level VI (Sienkiewicz). Whilst wandering through the vast maze of mysterious corridors it is possible to come across ancient chapels, unique chambers of salt with characteristic shape and geological arrangement, exhibits of old mining machinery and equipment as well as altars hewn from the rock, with beautiful statues and paintings. The tourist route in the Bochnia salt mine can not only be visited by foot but also by underground train, which shuttles 176m below ground between the “Campi” and “Sutoris” Mineshafts. Unusual attractions include the crossing of a corridor flooded with brine in a boat that is located at a depth of 230 metres as well as going down a slide that is on a ramp which is 140m long and has a difference in level of up to 30m. In 2000 Bochnia Salt Mine was entered on the list of Historical Monuments of Poland.
