From the Baltic coast and great lakes to forests, wetlands and mountain trails, Poland offers plenty of ways to spend a summer outdoors. You can hike in national parks, cycle through forests and countryside, paddle along quiet rivers, sail across large lakes or watch birds in some of the country\u2019s most valuable natural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Poland\u2019s varied landscapes also make it easy to combine outdoor activities with sightseeing, local food and visits to historic towns. Whether you are looking for an active holiday or simply want to spend more time in nature, there are plenty of places to explore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/div>\n\n\n\n

National parks: hiking, cycling and wildlife<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Poland has 23 national parks, protecting some of the country\u2019s most valuable landscapes and habitats. They range from the mountains in the south to wetlands, forests and the Baltic coast. For travellers, they are among the best places to experience Poland\u2019s natural side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hiking is the simplest way to explore them. In the Tatra National Park<\/a><\/strong>, trails lead through a dramatic mountain landscape of rocky peaks, valleys and alpine lakes. The park is home to Rysy, at 2,499 metres the highest mountain in Poland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Further east, the Bieszczady Mountains offer a very different experience, with open mountain meadows and long-distance hiking routes. For a quieter day outdoors, head to Kampinos National Park just outside Warsaw. Its forests, dunes and wetlands make an unexpected natural escape from the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cycling is another way to explore Poland\u2019s protected landscapes, but national parks have their own rules: bicycles are allowed only on designated routes. In Wigry National Park<\/strong><\/a> in north-eastern Poland, marked walking and cycling trails cross a landscape of forests, lakes and wetlands.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Meet Poland\u2019s wild side<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Poland\u2019s wetlands are particularly rewarding for wildlife lovers and birdwatchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biebrza National Park protects the vast wetlands of the Biebrza River valley. Nearby, Narwia\u0144ski National Park<\/a><\/strong> follows the Narew River and its distinctive network of waterways. Uj\u015bcie Warty National Park is another important wetland area and a good place for observing birds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the other end of the country, Bia\u0142owie\u017ca National Park<\/a><\/strong> protects part of the Bia\u0142owie\u017ca Forest, one of Europe\u2019s best-known ancient forest landscapes. It is particularly associated with the European bison, which has been successfully restored here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Along the Baltic coast, S\u0142owi\u0144ski National Park<\/a><\/strong> offers a completely different landscape, with shifting sand dunes, coastal lakes, forests and wetlands. On Wolin Island, Woli\u0144ski National Park<\/a><\/strong> combines forests, coastal cliffs and protected wetland habitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are planning an active day in a national park, check the current local regulations before setting out. Activities such as cycling, horse riding, fishing and boating are permitted only in designated places, and some areas may be temporarily closed to protect nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paddle through lakes and rivers<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Summer is an ideal time to explore Poland from the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Great Masurian Lakes in north-eastern Poland are the country\u2019s classic sailing destination. A network of interconnected lakes and waterways allows visitors to plan anything from a day on the water to a longer sailing trip, with small towns, villages and natural landscapes along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For kayaking, look beyond the big lakes. The Czarna Ha\u0144cza River in the Wigry region is one of Poland\u2019s well-known canoeing routes and connects with the August\u00f3w Canal. Wigry National Park also provides designated waters for kayaking, sailing and other non-motorised boating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The landscape here is particularly varied: Lake Wigry is surrounded by forests and smaller lakes, while marked trails allow visitors to continue exploring on foot or by bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Drawa River offers another kayaking experience, flowing through the forests and waterways of Drawa National Park<\/a><\/strong>. In the south, the Dunajec provides a completely different setting. Rafting and kayaking offer a chance to see the dramatic limestone cliffs and peaks of the Pieniny Mountains from the river.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sailing close to Warsaw and the Baltic<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to travel to the Masurian Lakes to spend time on the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just outside Warsaw, the Zegrze Reservoir is a popular destination for sailing and other water activities. It is one of the easiest options for a day by the water when visiting the capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Baltic coast offers another setting for outdoor adventures, from sailing and water sports to walks along beaches and coastal landscapes. On Wolin Island, the combination of the Baltic coast, protected nature and nearby resort towns makes it possible to combine time outdoors with sightseeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Slow down and explore<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not every summer adventure needs to involve a demanding hike or a long sailing trip. Poland\u2019s forests, lake districts and countryside are also well suited to walking, cycling and simply spending a few hours outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the pleasures of travelling around Poland in summer is the variety of experiences within a relatively small area. You can hike in the mountains, paddle a river, watch birds in the wetlands or spend a day sailing on a lake \u2014 and still have time to discover historic towns and taste local specialities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
