Founded in 1947, the Opole Philharmonic is one of Poland’s leading Orchestras and one of Poland’s proudest exports. They received the State Award for Arts Excellence from the Ministry of Culture of Poland in 1969 in honour of the Polish Composer Josef Elsner.

A major performing arts centre was built to house the orchestra in 1952 and has hosted world-famous musicians since then. The Orchestra is the only Polish Orchestra invited to participate in the Gala Concert in Rome to mark the 80th birthday of Pope John Paul II in May 2000.
