The scents of pine, exotic spices and dried mushrooms, spreading throughout December from stalls on the Main Market Square, are a reminder that Christmas is just round the corner…

Traders from Kraków and the Małopolska region will promote folk arts and crafts, regional delicacies and unusual Christmas decorations.

The Christmas Fair, Krakow (04/12/14)

Since 1945, the first Thursday in December -this year 04th of December- has been a celebration of Kraków’s nativity scenes. Their makers gather at the Adam Mickiewicz monument and at high noon they walk round the Sukiennice to the Historical Museum of the City of Kraków, the organiser of the annual Krakow Nativity Scene Competition.

Every year, nativity scenes made by children and young people appear side by side with those crafted by old masters and competition winners.

Three days later, on Sunday 07th of December, the museum director hosts a ceremony announcing the winners and opens a post-competition exhibition at the Krzysztofory Palace, featuring beautiful and colourful constructions several feet high, as well as miniature masterpieces.
