Musical journeys through Warmia and Masuria
Music can be a great background to the beautiful landscape and historic architecture of this region and if you like it can even be the main aim of your trip to Warmia and Masuria. Numerous musical events to choose from will certainly satisfy fans of many different music genres ranging from jazz and sea shanties to classical and reggae.
The Festival of Organ Music in Frombork
Let’s start with classical music. This year, one of the oldest festivals in Poland, The Festival of Organ Music in Frombork, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. Inside the magnificent cathedral at 3.30 pm every Saturday from 2nd of July to 13th of August, you will have the chance to listen to two great organs. The organs were built during the thirties of the last century and they are located in the presbytery in an old prospect, dating back to the 17th century, in the main nave. Musical Evenings in Święta Lipka
There is an abundance of wonderful musical instruments to be found in the churches of Warmia and Masuria. Many of them dating back to the end of the 19th century or the first decade of the 20th century. Therefore, organ festivals and concerts are held in many places in the region. The Olsztyn Organ Concert
Another musical event worth noting is the Olsztyn Organ Concert which has a long-standing tradition and is performed in Olsztyn’s Arch cathedral Basilica. Organists play on recently installed organs from 2007 which are located in the main nave in addition to much older organs from the’ Chaplains’ Choir from the 70s of the 19th century. Both instruments, the one in Święta Lipka and the other one in Olsztyn are historically linked thanks to Feliks Nowowiejski, a famous composer and prominent Warmian figure who was the author of ‘Rota’, march ‘Pod sztandarem pokoju’, the opera ‘Legenda Bałtyku’ and the oratory ‘Quo Vadis’. First, he studied in organ school in Święta Lipka and then he started his career as an organist in St. Jacob’s church Olsztyn now an Arch -cathedral Basilica. www.organfestival.pl
Pro Musica Antiqua
Other organ and chamber music festivals such as in Giżycko, Pasym, Pasłęk and some other locations in Warmia and Masuria often take place in magnificent historical buildings where fans of Bach, Mozart, Nowowiejski and other famous composers have a lot of opportunities for a real aesthetic experience. In 2017, for the 25th time, a group Pro Musica Antiqua is performing in twenty towns in Warmia and Masuria. The group consists of artist playing the most valuable pieces of music created by old and contemporary composers. The concerts take place in the historic interiors of castles, palaces and churches. They have also another advantage - they are a good form of relaxation and they let you discover the beauty of such buildings and offer you an experience in natural and cultural heritage. Traditional Old Jazz Meeting ‘Złota Tarka’ in Ilawa
In Warmia and Masuria you can hear classics from different genres of music. Jazz concerts have been held for 25 years in the amphitheater, called after Luis Armstrong, located by the lake in Iława. The International Festival the Traditional Old Jazz Meeting ‘Złota Tarka’ takes place in the afternoons and evenings of August. The concerts are usually performed by Polish and international jazz stars who are playing at the festival this year as well. This year the 49th edition of the festival, whose beginnings were in the famous student club ‘Stodoła’ in Warsaw, will take place from 11th-13th July. www.zlotatarka.pl
Reggae Festival in Ostroda
In Ostróda, the Reggae Festival will take place from 10th to 13th of August. The festival recalls the hot rhymes of Jamaica and Bob Marley as well as for some it brings back memories from the 60s and 70s of the last century. Every year famous stars from Poland and abroad like Kamil Bednarek or Dreadzone from Great Britain perform at the Festival. www.ostrodareggae.com
Polish Festival of Dance Music
Not far away from Ostróda there is another festival that is ideal for those who like dancing. This year from 28th- 29th of July during the Polish Festival of Dance Music (Ogólnopolski Festiwal Muzyki Tanecznej) you can dance to the rhythm of well-known Polish dance music stars such as: Akcent, After Party, Mig or Czadoman. Musical Days and Nights of Szczytno
During Musical Days and Nights of Szczytno which are held on 21 – 23 July in memory of Krzysztof Klenczon. who was born in Szczytno, and was a composer, a vocalist, a rock guitarist and the leader of Czerwone Gitary and Trzy Korony. He was the creator of famous hit singles such as: ‘Historia jednej znajomości’, ‘Powiedz stary gdzieś ty był’ and the most known song about Masuria and lakes ‘Wróćmy nad jeziora’. Festival of Sea and Sailing Songs in Gizycko
If you ‘chase cormorants’, obviously those from Piotr Szczepanik’s song ‘Goniąc kormorany ’ you will get to the Land of the Great Masurian Lakes. There you can not only see sails and sailing boats but also hear - sea shanties. They are usually played in numerous taverns but the ones played and sung at Niegocin lake in Giżycko have a particular charm. Here the Festival of Sea and Sailing Songs is for seasoned fans and the general public alike, you may even become an enthusiast of the songs of yachts and boats yourself! So, on 14th-15th July in the Eco Marina in Giżycko, the 25th edition of the Festival of Sea and Sailing Songs ’is taking place, entrance is free. www.gizyckiecentrumkultury.pl.
And a week later 22th - 23th of July inside the walls of Boyen fortress located between the lakes Kisiano and Niegocin , you can participate in a Hip-Hop Festival which will take place for the 16th time. Concerts in Mrągowo
As all roads lead to Mrągowo, you cannot miss the opportunity to take part in musical events held every year in this town at Lake Czos. Country Picnic is not just about music, it is also an interesting social gathering of enthusiasts of music, motorcycles and cars. There is western style clothes and a fair. The Picnic attracts thousands of fans every year and, this year it is being held from 28th - 30th of July. After that when the music and rhythms of the west are over, a nostalgic Festival of Borderland Culture showing some of the old traditions and modern achievements of our countrymen and women from inside the borders of Poland from the present and the past will take place.
Last year Mrągowo became the Masurian capital of opera music and on 22th of July in the amphitheater at Lake Czos, the Masurian Opera Festival BALCANTO is going to be held. The event was set up to present the world of opera at the highest level. In the second edition of the festival many famous artist will perform, for example, known for the 1st edition a soprano named Katarzyna Zając-Caban, a Brazilian mezzosoprano named Luciana Pansa and a Brazilian tenor named Max Jota- the winner of numerous prestigious prizes in vocal competitions, and bass Piotr Wołosz - the initiator of the festival. The Symphony Orchestra of the AVANGART foundation directed by Marta Kosielska will accompany the soloists.
On 15th of July, in the amphitheater you will have a chance to hear original Roma music, which contains countless romances and elements of chardash and also many other fast and lively songs making people dance. There will be something for the eye too as a lot of beautiful dancers and vocalists in incredibly richly embellished, colorful dresses will appear on stage. The Gypsy Carnival of Roma Music and Dance brings you three hours of great fun!

Olsztyn Blues Nights and Olsztyn Green Festival
Last but not least- the capital of the region –Olsztyn and two very important music events - Olsztyn Blues Nights 14th-15th July and the Olsztyn Green Festival 12th-13th of August, which will take place at the Ukiel Lake. This year the lineup includes : Hey, Łąki Łan, XxanaxX, Ten Typ Mess and Fisz and Emade who are giving great concerts for fans in beautiful natural surroundings. Olsztyn Blues Nights is one of the oldest and most popular blues festivals in Poland. The festival has been creating the history of blues in the region since 1984. World known artist such as: Champion Jack Dupree, Mud Morganfield, Bobby Rush, Diana Greenleaf, Janiva Magness and Joe Louis Walker have appeared on stage. This year artist like Pokój Numer 3, Hot Tamales Trio, Jerry’s Fingers, Hard Times, Makar & Children of the Corn, Blue Junkers Dany Franchi Band and Romek Puvhowski & Keith Dunn are appearing.
