The park is located in the Łęczyńsko-Włodawskie Lake District (Lublin Polesie) and includes a unique flatland of extensive peat bogs and swamps. In places it is reminiscent of the tundra or the transitional zone between tundra and taiga.
The peat bogs are home to many species of rare plants. The park is the nesting ground of numerous aquatic birds and also a refuge for animals such as the elk, wolf and the rare marsh turtle. The park has been recorded on the UNESCO list of World Biosphere Reserves and is under the protection of the RAMSAR International Convention.
