Information

The Zamość fortress was never conquered, neither by the Cossack Tartar army during Chmielnicki's rising, nor by the Swedes during their invasion.

The city was surrounded by a modern system of fortifications with bastions and three gates: the Lublin, Szczebrzeszyn and Lwów ones (in the 19th c. a fourth one was built, the so called New Lublin Gate). The Zamość fortress was never conquered, neither by the Cossack Tartar army during Chmielnicki's rising, nor by the Swedes during their invasion. A significant part of the city walls was taken down only in the second half of the 19th c. The history of the citadel is illustrated by the exhibition in the Arsenal. The chancellor's armoury, built near the palace during 1582-84, was used as a storing place for the weapons captured by Jan Zamoyski in numerous wars.
