The Hop and Basketry Fair takes place in Nowy Tomyśl near the end of August. The event starts at the world’s biggest wicker basket. From there a colourful parade fills the streets, celebrating the beginning of the tree-day-fair.
The Hop and Basketry Fair refers to old traditions of hop markets which since 1936 are accompanied by weaving shows and presentations of wicker products. Traditionally there is a ceremony referring to folk customs of water blessing and watering of wreath. At the fair there are also many hop and basketry competitions being held, like the most beautiful wicker form, the longest hop frame, the biggest hop and the most interesting shop-window – decorated of course with hop and wicker. At the fair the public have the opportunity to watch weaving techniques and the work of tradesmen and to buy many basketry items.
