The Wielki Theatre in Warsaw is gearing up for five premieres before the end of the season as well as a guest performance by the Mariinsky Theatre from St. Petersburg, writes Anna S. Dębowska.
"The 14 April premiere of "The Oresteia" will present the opera-drama that Maja Kleczewska (director) and Agata Zubel (composer) created on the basis of the ancient tragedy by Aeschylus. The two artists have worked together before, on "Sudden Rain/Between" and "Marat-Sade" based on Weiss at the National Theatre." (...)
Another project in the Territories cycle on the Chamber Stage will be Pascal Dusapin's opera "Medeamaterial" (28 April), which is a contemporary approach to an ancient myth, based on the text by Heiner Müller. It will be staged by Barbara Wysocka, whom music critics awarded a Polityka Passport two years ago for "seeing music" and "hearing theatre".
This year promises two premieres directed by Mariusz Treliński. As early as 16 March we will see his first-ever Wagner production: "The Flying Dutchman" with an international cast (a co-production with the Royal Danish Opera). (...)
Treliński's second premiere this year will open the new 2012/2013 season at the Polish National Opera in October; it will be yet another Puccini following "Madame Butterfly", "La Bohème" and "Turandot", staged by the Treliński-Kudlička team.
This season's series of opera premieres will conclude on 26 May with Igor Stravinsky's "The Nightingale" directed by Alexander Petrov.
This will not be the only Russian element this season. 27 March will see the Mariinsky Theatre's first guest performance in Warsaw, presenting Sergei Prokofiev's "War and Peace". (...)
The next premiere at the Polish National Opera will be "Senso", a contemporary opera by Marco Tutino conducted by Gerd Schaller, a joint production with the theatres of Bologna and Palermo."
