A new production of Halka, considered one of Moniuszko's greatest operas, will be played in Teatr Wielki - Polish National Opera in Warsaw starting December 2011. Stanisław Moniuszko’s Halka is the Polish Madame Butterfly, a story of ill-fated love with a social conflict in the background. Most contemporary productions reduce Halka’s libretto to a psychological drama, since there seem to be few clear class divisions today.
It takes a new look at this outstanding score, not just in theatrical but also in musical terms. Natalia Korczakowska, an award-winning director of the young generation of artists who are boldly changing the face of Polish theatre, is a name that guarantees an innovative approach to the drama of passion sketched by Moniuszko’s expert hand. The presence on the podium of Maestro Marc Minkowski, one of the most famous contemporary conductors, means that audiences can expect a genuine expedition into the unknown.
Opera in four acts ; World premiere of the four act version - 1 January 1858, Teatr Wielki, Warsaw ; Premiere of this production - 23 December 2011, Performance in Polish with projected English supertitles
