The park is located in the Łęczyńsko-Włodawskie Lake District (Lublin Polesie) and includes a unique flatland of extensive peat bogs and swamps.
The peat bogs are home to many species of rare plants. The park is the nesting ground for numerous aquatic birds and a refuge for animals such as the elk, wolf and a rare species of the marsh turtle.
The park is entered in the UNESCO list of World Biosphere Reserves. It is also under the protection of the RAMSAR International Convention.
