The romance of Chopin or capricious Szymanowski? Lutosławski, the aristocrat of the 20th century avant-garde or Penderecki, once a revolutionary and now a classic? Poland is rich in composers and the above are only some of them.

Lovers of ancient music should have a CD of the work of Mikołaj of Radom in their music collection – his music is European avant-garde from the end of the Middle Ages! The psalms of Mikołaj Gomółka are Renaissance masterpieces. Poland has a great tradition of lute music – enchanting and melodious dance pieces.

Find your way to Polish Baroque music through the religious compositions of Marcin Mielczewski and Bartłomiej Pękiel. The masterly orchestral pieces by Adam Jarzębski, Janiewicz and Kurpiński have become the symbols of classical elegance and early Romantic fantasy; however the true taste of Polish tradition can be discovered in the simple piano polonaises by Maria Szymanowska – this is the music Chopin was raised on!

Anyone who loves the opera has to see the colourful and melodious work of Stanisław Moniuszko: Halka or Straszny Dwór, and some of his less known, earlier work, is also worth listening to – without them the Polish nation can not be understood!
The chamber and piano music of Juliusz Zarębski is fascinating with its mature Romantic expression, as is the dark symphonic works of Mieczysław Karłowicz. The concerts of Ignacy Jan Paderewski, Maury Moszkowski, Zygmunt Stojowski and Franz Xaver Scharwenko are special ones for lovers of piano virtuosity.

A touch of modernity was brought into Polish music by Szymanowski, who was followed by dozens of other original talents. Grażyna Bacewicz has enriched the Neoclassical simplicity with strong emotions; Aleksander Tansman incorporated some jazz elements. The compositions of Andrzej Panufnik, Henryk Mikołaj Górecki and Wojciech Kilar created a mystical-religious trend in Polish music of the 20th century.

The uncompromising avant-garde of the ‘60’s was created by Tadeusz Baird, Kazimierz Serocki, Bogusław Schaeffer, and Witold Szalonek. Postmodern plays with tradition are the domain of Paweł Szymański, Zygmunt Krauze, and Krzysztof Knittl. Paweł Mykietyn, Cezary Duchnowski and Aleksandra Gryka are the new generation, the esthetics of the future. The face of Polish music is changing constantly and it is worth listening to!
