Crossing the border between Poland and other EU countries is very easy. As Poland is party to the Schengen Agreement on the abolition of border controls, there are no border formalities for visitors arriving from other EU countries. Crossing into non-Schengen countries bordering on Poland may take time and additional paperwork required by the immigration service of the neighbouring country.

Poland's neighbours

When visiting Poland you may also wish to visit one of the neighbouring countries. It is essential, however, to enquire with the consulates of the countries of your choice which documents will be required to cross their borders.

The Ukraine

While planning to visit Lwow, which is situated 300 kilometres from Krakow, you may use your own vehicle or one of the regular coach services running between the two cities. Unfortunately, the border formalities on the Ukrainian side could be very lengthy.

EU citizens do not require an entry visa.

Slovakia

EU nationals are only required to show a valid ID card/passport to cross the Slovak border. From the High Tatra, Pieniny and the Silesian Beskid Mountains it is easy to cross into Slovakia to experience wonderful flora and fauna and a completely different culture. During winter it may be difficult to travel to Slovakia by road as the roads through the mountains may be obstructed by snow.

Russia

There are two checkpoints which enable entry into Russia or more precisely the Kaliningrad District. The first is a ferry service between the Polish port of Gdynia and Kaliningrad. The second is on the road No 51 through the border checkpoint in Bezledy.
To enter Russia you will need a visa and an invitation or a confirmed hotel booking.

Belarus

Grodno is situated about 80 kilometres from Bialystok. The city is famous for its interesting historic sites. To visit Belarus you require a visa.

Lithuania

The city of Vilnius is situated 70 kilometres from the Polish border and is worth a visit due to its historic centre and a variety of Baroque architectural landmarks, now listed by UNESCO as World Heritage site.

The Czech Republic

During winter time it may be difficult to travel to the Czech Republic by road as the passage through the mountains may be obstructed by snow. Prague is about 100km from the Polish border by roads E65 and E67.

Germany

A network of first-class roads makes it easy to drive to Berlin and other towns in eastern Germany to and from Poznan and Wroclaw.
