Postal Service

Poland's efficient postal system facilitates the exchanging mail with your friends and relatives. It is also the best way to send a thoughtful post card.

Whilst in Poland, visitors should not worry in the least about using the postal service to stay in touch with home. Postage stamps can be bought virtually anywhere and even the smallest towns have mailboxes, unsurprisingly painted in red, where a letter can be dropped. The Polish Post Office offers two ways to send a letter, by priority or economy mail. Naturally, priority mail is more expensive, costing about PLN 2 (Zloty) within Poland and PLN 3 (Zloty) to most international destinations and will arrive quicker than if sent by economy post.

A letter sent by economy post usually costs around PLN 1.30 (Zloty) within Poland and PLN 2.40 (Zloty) internationally. In larger cities it is common to come across personnel in postal offices with a working knowledge of English and sometimes other languages.

Postal offices are usually open on weekdays from the early morning hours through to the evening and Saturdays till the afternoon.

Internet

  • The number of internet users in Poland keeps growing in leaps and bounds. It is now easy to find a place to log onto a blog or email account while on holiday.

In cities, apart from inside hotels, internet access is available in many places, the most popular being internet cafes. Some of them are even open 24-hours a day. In smaller towns and cities there are considerably fewer internet cafes but there generally should not be a problem with finding at least one place to log on. Prices vary, so an hour on-line may cost anywhere between PLN 2 (Zloty) and PLN 7 (Zloty). It is also possible to pay for shorter time slots.

For those who take their computers with them wherever they go, there are hundreds of "hotspots" in big cities that offer free wireless access as well as those found in larger hotels. It is important to note, however, that internet access in some hotels is not included in the cost of the room.

    Telephone

Poland's telephone network is well developed and offers all the usual facilities. As the mobile technology is now superseding the traditional copper wire communication, you will find that many people give up home numbers in favour of a cheaper mobile service.

    Mobile Network

The mobile network coverage in Poland is on a par with other EU countries. Regardless of which UK service provider you are with, you will be able to make and receive calls almost everywhere in Poland. Please contact your network provider to find out about international roaming charges.

To make mobile calls within Poland, it is often more convenient and cheaper to purchase a prepaid SIM card from one of Poland's several service providers. They offer the usual services including GPRS and MMS on the pay-as-you-go basis.

    Long Distance Dialling

If calling long distance within Poland (nationally), dial a "0" and wait. After a short pause, you'll hear a faint tone - that's your signal. Then dial the city code and phone number.

If calling internationally, dial "0" again, when you get the second tone, dial the country code followed by the rest of the number.

Poland can be reached from the UK by dialling 00, then 48 followed by the relevant city code (without the leading "0") and the telephone number.
