This National Park can be found on the country's southern border which runs through the Carpathian Mountains between Poland and Slovakia. The park encompasses the vast Tatra massif. The Tatra Mountains, including its highest peak, Mount "Rysy" at a height of 2,499metres above sea level, is the only mountain range in Poland featuring characteristic Alpine landscapes. The jagged granite ridges and forested slopes, post-glacial depressions, mountain lakes, numerous caves and scenic valleys with their rushing mountain streams form truly beautiful scenery.

Spruce forests mixed with fir, larch, beech and sycamore dominate the foothills up to an altitude of about 1,200 metres above sea level. The Highlands, up to 1,550 metres above sea level, are covered with spruce with a scattering of stone pine trees. The dwarf pines, at 1,800 metres above sea level, give way to Alpine meadows and pastures, but above 2,300 meters above sea level only the crags and peaks dominate.

The fauna of the Tatra Range abounds in indigenous and Alpine mammals such as the marmot and the chamois. There is also a small population of bears. The Tatra Mountain Range is one of Poland's last refuges of the golden eagle.

The Tatrzanski National Park is registered by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve.
